Roselle Real Estate & Information

Roselle Real Estate & Information

Like many Illinois communities, Roselle's beginnings were rural and agricultural in nature, with corn and flax the primary crops. In 1837, Deacon Hough brought his family to settle in the Bloomingdale area. His sixteen-year-old Rosell came with him, working in the area for about three years prior to moving to Chicago. From there, he distinguished himself as a meat-packer, an alderman and finally an officer in the Union Army. When he retired in 1868, he moved back home. Recognizing the business potential, he bought land to grow flax and opened a linen company. He became the first president of the Chicago and Pacific Railroad Company. He managed to arrange for the train line to come through the area. The station stop became Roselle, after him, but with the name misspelled. Proximity to the city of Chicago gradually transformed Roselle into a more sophisticated and affluent bedroom community. Resting on the western edge of Chicago, it is part of the metropolitan area. Currently about 23,000 residents call Roselle their home. Roselle real estate is more expensive than in much of Illinois, but per capital income is also high with and estimated median household income in 2012 of $76,614.
